See all blog posts The French Do It Better (Hey, Get Your Mind Out of the Gutter—I’m Talking About Fashion!)
Greetings from gay Paree! I’m in the City of Lights for fashion week, an 8-day style-fueled extravaganza that would make Carrie Bradshaw weak in the knees. I have to say, it’s a little odd to be looking at all the pricey handbags and sheer party dresses that designers whipped up for spring ’09 in this chilly financial climate. But since a 5-minute little escape from reality can help stave off seasonal (and other kinds of) depression, I’ll be reporting back fashion week highs for the next few days. First off, the Isabel Marant show, where the hip French designer gave Ralph Lauren a run for his money…
The show opened with “Kids in America” by the Muffs* playing on full volume as models hit the runway in plaid flannel pants, lace tops, cool denim jackets and red, white and blue embroidered tops—what the French designer must imagines us U.S. kids wear around town. (If only!) How is it that a Frenchie can create a hip, American look that rivals styles from stateside designers?

Look at those great chain-wrapped suede boots! Crafty-types could totally DIY the look for this winter!

I love how there’s a slight Western vibe, but the models don’t look like they’re going to start line dancing anytime soon.

And the few turquoise bracelets—what a cool way to brighten up a low-key look!
*Doesn’t sound familiar? Dig deep into your CD—yes CD collection!—and dig out the Clueless soundtrack from ’95. “Kids in America” is the opening track, and I must say, an excellent choice for easy, getting-dressed-in-the-morning listening!
